USS Intrepid & Land Rover
dandelion + burdock together with Imagination created a complex and spectacular projection mapping piece for the reveal of the brand new Land Rover Discovery Concept.
Aboard the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York and featuring the Virgin Galactic, the vehicle was revealed with a dramatic and exciting display. Simultaneous mapping saw a beautiful earth rise on the ships bridge, before a more fast paced section of connecting satellites, scanning domes and terrains transferred the focus from the bridge to the dome where the vehicle was brought to life.
Having support from an outstanding technical team from Creative Technologies and local surveyors Langan, we created an accurate model of the ship’s bridge that required an excrutiating amount of detail.
This allowed for the accurate planning of hardware requirements also made it possible to present the client with a precise 3d visualisation of the projected results.
While having to change layouts and projector positions in the very last project phase, the calibration of 6 twin stacks of projectors, excluding blending, took not much longer than half an hour after the projection team had installed and setup their hardware.
dandelion + burdock also had the pleasure of working with Kate Dawkins on this Land Rover event. Her vision and direction helped our animation team to deliver a succinct, stylish and graphical piece to an impressive soundtrack.
All in all we were very privileged to work for clients who knew and harnessed this venue for its unique overview of the New York Midtown skyline, amongst the space-race machines and aircraft exhibits, crowned by the presence of Virgin Galactic Spaceship, opening a new chapter of aviation.

THE NEW YORK TIMES
"the Discovery’s unveiling was a striking affair: Guests were lifted to the Intrepid’s flight deck on an elevator that once hoisted fighter planes to the flight deck. Huge projections of the New York skyline, and a view of earth from outer space, were beamed onto the Intrepid’s soaring bridge as music boomed and a geodesic dome onstage flashed with patterns of light.
The S.U.V. that followed nearly lived up to the huge buildup: The Discovery looked sleek and chic with its silvery, streamline fuselage, rear-hinge suicide doors and huge chrome wheels."

USA TODAY
"NEW YORK -- Now that the press preview New York Auto Show is history, we’re pondering what might have been the most lavish, spectacular, newsworthy and interesting new model introduction.
For sheer spectacle value, the answer is easy: It’s the Land Rover Discovery concept.
We thought the unbelievable introduction of the Jaguar F Type sports coupe in Los Angeles late last year would have been tough to top -- cars racing through an old hanger through a maze of red laser lights -- but sibling brand Land Rover comes right back with an extravaganza aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum as a prelude to its auto show introduction.
Guests arrived via the retired aircraft carrier’s port-side plane elevator, which carried them to the flight deck. There, a multi media display was projected against the ship’s “island,” the superstructure above the deck, as the music blared. Besides the museum’s array of military aircraft, to one side was a mockup of the Virgin Galatic spaceship that will start taking paying passengers to the edge of the atmosphere. To the other was the star of the show, the concept version of the Land Rover Discovery under a half dome.
Lots of us tried to capture the scene with smartphones or cameras slung around our necks, but none of it comes close to the professional video of the event that Land Rover has put out.
Now after these spectaculars, Jaguar and Land Rover will have to figure out how they can top themselves.
