Kronos Quartet

onedotzero commissioned us in 2008 to create animated stage visuals for Kronos Quartet's '4 Cast: Unpredictable' event in New York. The performance was a sound installation in four movements based on shortwave radio transmissions of mysterious numbers, known as Conet numbers, which have been broadcast by government agencies since the 1940s for unknown reasons.

During the performance, the musicians' headsets played Conet number sequences, which were picked up live by a radio receiver on stage. Each musician responded by playing previously composed musical pieces corresponding to each number, on an assortment of unusual instruments and machines.

We created a 15-minute animation to play on three screens during the performance, based on a theme of sequences, codes and radio waves.
